How Long Does an NFC Tag Last?

Water, heat, scratches and write cycles: what actually shortens the life of a tag, and what barely touches it.

A common worry before buying a batch of tap cards is simple: how long will they actually last? Will a wet wipe ruin them, will the sun fade them, will a busy day of taps wear them out? The reassuring answer is that most of what people fear does not harm a tag at all, and the things that do are easy to avoid once you know them.

What a tag is actually made of

At its heart a tag is a small chip connected to a thin antenna, sealed inside a card, stand, sticker, or inlay. There is no battery to run down and no moving parts to wear out, which is a large part of why tags age so well. The chip wakes only when a phone's field reaches it, and the rest of the time it simply sits there, waiting.

The outer material is what meets the world, so the finish matters more than the electronics for everyday wear. That is why the format you choose should match the life the tag will live. You can see the range on our products page.

Water and moisture

Water is the thing customers worry about most and the thing tags handle best. A sealed tag is not troubled by a splash, a spill, or a wipe with a damp cloth. Inlays are designed to sit inside something else, such as a label or a laminated card, where moisture never reaches the chip at all.

What does cause trouble is prolonged soaking, especially if the seal is damaged. A tag left in a puddle for hours, or one that has been cracked so water can reach the antenna, may stop reading. Splashes and routine cleaning are not a problem; standing water and a broken seal are.

Heat and sunlight

Sunlight fades printed surfaces and can make some materials brittle over a long time, but the chip itself is not the fragile part. A card left on a hot dashboard or near a hot appliance is more likely to suffer from the material around the chip than from the heat reaching the electronics.

The practical rule is to keep tags out of constant direct sun and away from strong, sustained heat, and to expect the print to fade before the tag stops working. A table stand by a sunny window may look tired long before it fails.

Scratches and everyday wear

Scratches on the surface are almost always cosmetic. As long as the antenna inside the card is intact, a scuffed tag keeps reading perfectly well. The antenna, not the printing, is what carries the signal, and it is protected by whatever material surrounds it.

The real risk is physical damage that breaks the antenna: a card bent sharply, cracked across its width, or punctured. A tag that has been folded, snapped, or cut may stop responding even though it looks almost normal. Treating cards like any stiff card and not like a piece of scrap is usually all the care they need.

Write cycles and rewrites

Some customers worry that a tag will "use up" if written to often. Rewriting does have a limit over the very long term, but that limit is far beyond what a review card ever sees, because a finished card is normally written once and then only read. Reading a tag does not wear it out in any practical sense.

Where rewriting matters is during setup, when you may test and adjust a link several times. That is a handful of writes at most, which is nothing against the life of the chip. Once your link is right, you write it once and lock it if you wish.

What really wears a tag out

Putting it together: water is fine, sunlight mostly fades the print rather than the chip, scratches are cosmetic, and routine writes do not wear a tag out. What shortens a tag's life is physical damage that breaks the antenna, long soaking, and sustained heat. Avoid those three and a tag will keep working for a long time.

If a tag does stop reading after a knock or a bend, the fix is usually simply to replace it, since the card is doing the physical work while the link stays the same. You can read more about how that setup works on our green page.
